A 20-day course designed for medically qualified personnel who are employed, or are thinking of employment, within the offshore oil and gas Industry. The course includes:
- A 10-day training centre phase covering Primary Health Care, trauma, major incident training, environmental health & tropical module; - A 5-day Primary care placement; - A 5-day A&E hospital placement.
Introduction
An offshore medic must be able to operate independently of definitive care facilities, have a thorough understanding of his/her limitations and resources, be aware of the dangers of remote environments and be adaptable and flexible to an ever-changing arena.
Remote environment medics operating within the oil, gas and exploration industry are subject to a 4 week HSE accredited course. A refresher course after 3 years is mandatory to allow the medic to continue practising.
Prerequisites
Candidates must meet the criteria set out in the Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First aid) regulations 1989, (SI 1989 No.1671). They must be:
EITHER a registered general nurse whose details appear in the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register in those sections relating to General Nursing (1,2,7 or 12) with at least 3 years post registration experience.
OR have regular service in one of the following:
- Army - Combat Medical Technician Class 1 (RAMC CMT Class 1); - Royal Navy - Leading Medical Assistant (LMA) or above; - RAF - Corporal or above in the RAF Medical Branch; - RMA 1 or equivalent with proof of continuous professional experience.
Suitability for attendance on the course will be assessed individually. This will be based upon qualifications held and also recent and relevant experience.
Due to the conditions placed upon us by the Health and Safety Executive who has given us the authority to run these courses, we cannot provide a refresher course to anyone who cannot provide evidence of previous offshore medic training.
Course Duration
The full course requires 20 working days training (120 hours including examination) and is split into modules. The modules are the following:
- Cardiac (ILS) Course; - Trauma Module; - Primary Health Care Module; - Environmental Health; - Major Incident Training; - Tropical Health Module; - Primary care team placement; - Hospital Accident and Emergency department placement.
Offshore Medics Refresher course
- The refresher course only requires the classroom based modules and those wishing to refresh their current HSE Offshore Medic qualification may also attend the first two weeks of the main course.
